What’s It About?
“A bone-chilling nightmare from the directors of GOODNIGHT MOMMY, THE LODGE follows a family who retreats to their remote winter cabin over the holidays. When the father (Richard Armitage) is forced to abruptly depart for work, he leaves his children, Aidan (Jaeden Martell) and Mia (Lia McHugh) in the care of his new girlfriend, Grace (Riley Keough). Isolated and alone, a blizzard traps them inside the lodge as terrifying events summon specters from Grace’s dark past. ” — NEON
Why You Should Check It Out
Co-written and directed by Austrian filmmakers Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz, THE LODGE is the love child of Stanley Kubrick’s THE SHINING and Ari Aster’s HEREDITARY — an ice-cold slow-burn that’s as atmospheric as it is unsettling.
With a tremendous turn by Keough, sumptuously dark cinematography by Thimios Bakatakis (THE LOBSTER, THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER), Sylvain Lemaitre’s (TURBO KID) cabin fever-inducing production design, and a haunting score by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans (HBO’s THE OUTSIDER), THE LODGE is a must-see horror movie.
For the better part of a decade now, we’ve been experiencing something of a renaissance in the horror genre. From CABIN IN THE WOODS, YOU’RE NEXT, and THE CONJURING to IT FOLLOWS and THE BABADOOK, to THE BLACKCOAT’S DAUGHTER, THE WITCH, and GET OUT, it’s been a great time to be a horror enthusiast. 2020 is shaping up to be another killer year for the genre. Like the aforementioned modern classics, Fiala and Franz’s film demands your attention. It’s elegant, eerie, and will linger in your mind long after the credits have rolled.
THE LODGE is currently in theaters. For more horror recommendations, check out my Top 50 Horror Films of the Decade (2010-2019) at Letterboxd.
