Over the past 12 months, we saw new work from visionary filmmakers like Guillermo Del Toro, James Cameron, Sarah Polley, Steven Spielberg, and Ti West, who delivered not one but two excellent films in 2022: X and PEARL.

We witnessed outstanding performances from Michelle Yeoh, Brendan Fraser, Cate Blanchett, Colin Farrell, Tilda Swinton, Viola Davis, and Ralph Fiennes. And we were left in awe by cinematic art like THE FABELMANS, S. S. Rajamouli’s RRR, and EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE, ALL AT ONCE – works of impeccable craftsmanship by cinematographers, production designers, SFX artists, and costume designers alike.

For horror fans, 2022 delivered a brood of impressive titles, including Jordan Peele’s NOPE, Chloe Okuno’s WATCHER, Zach Cregger’s BARBARIAN, Mark Mylod’s THE MENU, Aaron Moorhead & Justin Benson’s SOMETHING IN THE DIRT, and Scott Derrickson’s THE BLACK PHONE, not to mention a one-two punch of awesome IP reboots in PREY and HELLRAISER.

Crime comedies like GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY, SEE HOW THEY RUN, and Greg Mottola’s CONFESS, FLETCH made us laugh, while THE BATMAN, TOP GUN: MAVERICK, BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER, and AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER took us for an unforgettable ride. And documentaries like GOOD NIGHT OPPY, mockumentaries like MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON, and dramas like A LOVE SONG, WOMEN TALKING, and THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN stirred our souls.

It was another excellent year for movies. With that being said, here are My 10 Favorite Films of 2022. Also included are My Top 25 Horror Films of the year (the real main event), as well as My 12 Favorite Streaming Series. And remember, as Daniel Kwan points out, ranking any piece of art is absurd and should only be seen as an incredibly personal and subjective endeavor. The purpose of these lists is to expose you to titles you may not have heard of otherwise!
